●Happiness Brand Bicycle Shop
Bicycles were the most popular transports in Taiwan during the 1940s and early 1950s, and Happiness was the most famous bike brand then. Nowadays, although almost every Taiwanese household has a car, there is still a shop named Happiness Brand Bicycle Shop in
Beitau.
The old bike shop is located at #27 Zhongzheng Rd.(中正路27號) The shopkeeper, Chen, Qing-Lin (陳慶琳), has been selling bicycles for more than a half of centenary. Despite his business is getting slack, Chen still persists in running the shop.
Visiting the old bicycle shop is just like stepping into the warmest historic dream of Beitau. There are also lots of old stores nearby the bicycle shop. This area used to be a traditional market to sell stuff for daily use, such as shoes, pots, and soy-bean sauces. These old stores have a common characteristic. Their shutters are made by wood boards which can be taken apart easily. Whenever the stores open, these wood boards will be taken apart, and the windows will be turned into counters, cash desks, or wickets. It is a creative idea showing the wisdom of Taiwanese people.
